Post traumatic stress disorder, PTSD, is a serious mental illness that occurs in people involved in some traumatic event such as a deadly car crash, a fire, or in many cases a war. PTSD often consists of flashbacks or persistent frightening thoughts about the traumatic event. PTSD can also cause individuals to become distant, especially from people they were once close to. PTSD affects nearly 8 million Americans each year and is especially troubling for our veterans. It is important to learn about PTSD, and its effects when considering the safety and sacrifices of our veterans.
